Current Research Study

Dr. Richard Angelo is one of several prominent orthopedic surgeons in the United States who has been selected to participate in a multi-center research study of a new implantable device designed by Rotation Medical, Inc. (www.rotationmedical.com) for use in patients who have been diagnosed with a torn rotator cuff.

The Rotation Medical Bioinductive Implant consists of an implantable device about the size of a postage stamp made from highly purified, highly porous collagen. This device is placed arthroscopically or through a mini-open procedure at the location of your rotator cuff tendon tear. It is positioned just below the bony projection of your shoulder blade, or acromion, and anchored in place with small staples. It dissolves slowly, and may enable the body to build new tissue on top of the injured tendon and increase the thickness of your rotator cuff tendon over time. (Click on animation below for an overview of the procedure).

If you meet the conditions below, you may be eligible to participate in this study:

  • Age 21 or older.
  • Persistent shoulder pain despite conservative treatments such as pain medication, cortisone injections, and physical therapy.
  • MRI of the shoulder showing a tear of your supraspinatus tendon.
  • Willing to return to the clinic for follow-up at 3 months, 1 year, and 2 years after your study procedure.
